University life

The campus between doors

A conversation can start just as the other person needs to leave.

A university corridor with a bench, tall windows and the ATLAS laboratory door.
The campus between doors · Fiction
Where we are
In UMC’s communal areas, around the entrance to the laboratory and the routes leading to it.
What it feels like
Light from the courtyard, footsteps, doors and voices coming closer and moving away.

The corridor connects classrooms, offices and the laboratory to a university that keeps going outside ATLAS. It is a place for finding your way, passing through and brief encounters: someone leaves in a hurry, someone else waits by a door, and a conversation begins before there is anywhere to sit.

What is here

  • Numbered doors and simple landmarks for finding the way.
  • A noticeboard of university activities, a courtyard window and a waiting bench.
  • Stairs and a lift that allow people to move through the building at different paces.

Before crossing the threshold

For someone who knows the building, a number or a door is enough to keep walking. For Leo on arrival, these are landmarks he still has to learn. The bench, noticeboard and courtyard give that first contact an everyday scale. Approaching ATLAS means entering a team, but also finding his way in a place where many people already know where they are going.

The time an encounter allows

Not every conversation can be finished here. Someone waiting for an answer may meet a person who already has to leave; a call takes up the minute before entering. The bench provides somewhere to wait or sit, while the stairs and lift offer different routes. Choosing one changes how long an encounter lasts and how easy it is to keep talking. For Leo, an unplanned conversation leaves little time to rehearse; for someone else, it may simply be the way to a commitment of their own.

A university larger than the challenge

Noticeboard announcements and movement between classrooms are reminders of activities, studies and friendships outside research. The team shares part of a day, not every hour. Each person has other plans and may choose a different route on leaving. It is the same campus for everyone, although it does not mean the same opportunity or the same ease in relating to others.

What travels from one room to another

A message read by the door or a half-finished question can accompany someone back to their desk. There is also a shift between what is said in front of the group and what can be discussed while walking. This space in between connects working lives and personal lives without requiring everyone to know all that happened before they met.
