Private space

Leo’s room

Here he reopens the laptop or thinks through what happened during the day.

A study desk and bed in Leo’s room.
Leo’s room · Fiction
Where we are
In a shared flat away from the laboratory; the room is his own space, not the whole home.
What it feels like
A lamp beside the desk and the contrast between his own quiet and the sounds of the flat.

Leo rents a room in a shared flat. It is his place to rest, work on personal projects and revisit what happened during the day. The door separates his space from the rest of the home, without erasing the sounds of the kitchen outside or the limits of a computer far more modest than the laboratory’s resources.

What is here

  • A bed against the left wall and a desk beneath the window.
  • A laptop, small monitor, adjustable lamp and short bookcase.
  • The notebook beside the computer and clothes that do not always reach the wardrobe.

The relief of letting his guard down

In his room, Leo can stop preparing every reply and watching how people look at him. Taking off his headphones or sitting on the bed has a different rhythm from taking his place at ATLAS. Needing that space does not remove his wish for company. Sometimes the peace of arriving home and the desire to talk to someone fit into the same afternoon.

A desk with different resources

The laptop and small monitor let him edit code, organise specifications and run light tests. The work depends on specifications and decisions he writes down so he can return to them; a conversation with a tool needs that explicit context. The computer’s memory, processing capacity and the services he pays for have limits. Moving elsewhere does not extend his permissions either. A test he can run at his desk may give him freedom to choose and compete with the rest he came home to find.

The notebook and the story he tells himself

Near the computer is the notebook where he writes questions, attempts and intentions. Paper preserves a formulation after the day’s conversation has ended. It also shows what is still taking up his attention. Writing can help Leo think and still be only a partial interpretation: recognising a difficulty does not mean he will know how to handle it the next day.

A refuge with a door to the outside

Tiredness comes home with Leo, along with replies rehearsed too late and the wish to continue a project. He can sit on the bed, look at the notebook or reopen the computer. A closed door offers rest, although sometimes he wants someone to tell something to.
