ATLAS laboratory

Leo arrives at a desk slightly apart; everyone else already has work to do.

Where we are
On a research floor at UMC, entered from the campus corridor.
What it feels like
Daylight through tall windows, keyboards, brief conversations and the steady sound of nearby equipment.

ATLAS is the Responsible AI Laboratory at the fictional Universidad Metropolitana del Centro. It occupies part of a shared research floor and has other projects alongside Benchmarking WSI Privacy, Track 1. In that challenge, the team studies whether digital tissue images can be linked even after names have been removed. Leo joins through a paid, supervised opportunity; the people already there have work that does not stop to welcome him.

What is here

  • Six desks arranged in two islands, with tall windows along the west side.
  • A mobile whiteboard, a delivery board and task cards naming the person responsible.
  • Plants among the desks and a coffee corner away from the infrastructure.

Different ways of working

Mara prepares and preserves data versions; Alicia checks the claims made about them. Nico connects tools and services; Jun organises how they run. Leo joins the modelling and development work. Nadia reviews the method during her allocated hours, while Inés sets priorities and answers for the whole project.

That division of work is visible in the desks, papers and conversations. Someone may be comparing two images while someone else checks a run. Gathering around the same screen does not mean everyone is looking for the same answer.

Finding a place

The central islands let people ask for an opinion without calling a meeting. They also make it hard to shut out conversations, movement and interruptions. Leo arrives at a desk slightly apart from the group and still reads that distance through his own doubts. Headphones give him room to concentrate; they do not stop the people around him from needing something.

Work left in view

The delivery board, comparison sheets and named task cards turn an idea into visible commitments. Leo’s laptop and Mara’s notebook take up little space, but hold different decisions. Changing one part of the work may require someone else to review another. At ATLAS, finishing your part and leaving it usable by others do not always happen at the same time.

One floor, several atmospheres

The west-facing windows light the central desks. At the far end, the servers are in the north-west and the review room in the north-east; Inés’s office is on the east wall. Moving rooms makes it possible to go from testing an idea to discussing its limits or speaking privately. The coffee point is on the same floor; going to La Segunda Taza means leaving campus and allowing for the time of the people working there.
